~ SERVICE OF THE WORD ~
May 16, 2021
Seventh Sunday Of Eastertide
PRAYER IN PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
Holy God, you invite us to share in the unity of all that is Holy: your creation, your people, united in the Spirit that breaks through all boundaries of fear and injustice. Meet us here today and teach us to be one in love, understanding, and peace. We ask all this in the name of Jesus, whose fervent prayer was “May they all be one.” Amen.

Pastor: Clap your hands and shout to god with loud songs of joy.
People: Sing praises to God, who fills the world with forgiveness and grace.
“Arise, Your Light Is Come”
Arise, your light is come! The Spirit’s call obey;
Show forth the glory of your God which shines on you today!
Arise, your light is come! Fling wide the prison door;
Proclaim the captive’s liberty, good tidings to the poor.
Arise, your light is come! All you in sorrow born,
Bind up the brokenhearted ones and comfort those who mourn.
Arise, your light has come! The mountains burst in song!
Rise up like eagles on the wing; God’s power will make us strong.
Ruth Duck, 1973 / William Walter, 1872
CALL TO CONFESSION
UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, you encourage us with your love. We confess that we need your life-giving power in our lives and in our relationships. We have hurt others and been hurt by them. We are often angry and afraid. Forgive us, God. Transform us so our lives and our loving will give glory to You and to our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Two Ways
Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Jesus Prays For His Disciples
Now I’m returning to you. I’m saying these things in the world’s hearing so my people can experience my joy completed in them. I gave them your word; The godless world hated them because of it, because they didn’t join the world’s ways, just as I didn’t join the world’s ways. I’m not asking that you take them out of the world but that you guard them from the Evil One. They are no more defined by the world than I am defined by the world. Make them holy—consecrated—with the truth; Your word is consecrating truth. In the same way that you gave me a mission in the world, I give them a mission in the world. I’m consecrating myself for their sakes so they’ll be truth-consecrated in their mission. I’m praying not only for them but also for those who will believe in me because of them and their witness about me. The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind—Just as you, Father, are in me and I in you, so they might be one heart and mind with us. Then the world might believe that you, in fact, sent me. The same glory you gave me, I gave them, so they’ll be as unified and together as we are—I in them and you in me. Then they’ll be mature in this oneness, and give the godless world evidence that you’ve sent me and loved them in the same way you’ve loved me.

TEACHING TIME FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS
“Eternal Christ, Who, Kneeling”
Eternal Christ, who, kneeling when earthly tasks were done,
Turned unto God appealing “That they may all be one”.
We thank you for your vision of unity untorn.
Of faith without division with which your church was born.
But we have often slighted the ties designed to hold
Your followers united within one common fold.
On history’s tattered pages we see, O Christ, with shame,
The strife which through the ages has marred your church’s name.
Accept our deep contrition for all our sundering ways
Which still disrupt your mission, which mock our words of praise.
Christ, may your spirit guide us that we may find, beyond
The things which still divide us, love’s all-embracing bond.
William W. Reid, Jr. 1976 / Finnish hymn, harmony David Evans, 1927
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
“The Apostles’ Creed”
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
He ascended into heaven,
He is seated at the right hand of the Father,
And he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy catholic Church
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting. Amen.
MORNING PRAYERS & LORD’S PRAYER
Pastor: Let us turn our hearts to God in our morning prayers…the Lord be with you.
People: And with you also.
Pastor: Let us pray…
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
Praise Him, all creatures here below.
Praise Him above ye heav’nly host.
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen.
Prayer Of Dedication
“God, Speak To Me, That I May Speak”
God, speak to me, that I may speak
In living echoes of your tone;
As you have sought, so may we seek
Your erring children, lost and lone.
O lead me God, that I may lead
Some wanderers along life’s way;
O feed me so that I may feed
Your hungry ones without delay.
O fill me with your fullness, God,
Your overflowing love to know;
In glowing word and kindling thought,
Your love to tell, your praise to show.
O use me, God, use even me
Just as you will, and when, and where;
Until your blessed face I see,
Your rest, your joy, your glory share.
