Father's Day

PRAYER IN PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Keeper of our lives, you call your people to faithful living. Through the storms of life that bring suffering and fear, joy and laughter. Teach us to turn to you for all we need, so that we may come to know your presence even in the midst of the trials that surround us. Amen.

GREETING & ANNOUNCEMENTS

SOLEMN DECLARATION & CALL TO WORSHIP

Pastor:   It’s awesome when all of God’s people live together in unity!

People: When waters are rough, we hold each other tightly. When the sea begins to swallow us, we hold each other tightly and call on God.

Pastor:   But we also need God and each other when there are no looming waves.

People: We can splash and play in the shallow end, and venture into deep waters with trusted friends. Delighting in refreshing currents of community and savoring each burst of laughter, let’s invite others to join in the fun.

GATHERING HYMN

“How Firm A Foundation”

How firm a foundation for you has been laid,

By God in the Word, in the sacrifice paid!

What more can God say than to you has been said,

To you, who for refuge to Jesus have fled!

"Fear not, I am with you, oh, be not dismayed,

For I am you God, I will still give you aid;

I'll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand

Upheld by my gracious, omnipotent hand."

"The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose,

I will not, I will not desert to its foes;

That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,

I'll never, no never, no never forsake!"

CALL TO CONFESSION

UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, be with us in your hour of need. When lashed by the winds of life, we long to hear you speak words of grace, “Peace! Be still!” When frightened by the waves of woe, we yearn to have you by our side, calming our fear. Reveal your presence in the eye of the storm, and give us courage to call out in our need, for you are our calm center and our hope when all hope seems lost.

FIRST READING

Psalm 130

Waiting For Divine Redemption

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

GOSPEL READING

Mark 4: 35-41

Jesus Stills A Storm

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

HYMN

“If You But Trust In God To Guide You"

If you but trust in God to guide you,

With hopeful heart through all your ways,

You will find strength with God beside you,

To beat the worst of evil days;

For those who trust God's changeless love

build on the rock that will not move.

Only be still and wait God's pleasure

In cheerful hope, with heart content,

Trusting that grace, which knows no measure

Will by unbounded love be sent;

Nor doubt our inmost wants are clear

To One who holds us always near.

Sing, pray and keep God's was unswerving;

Offer your service faithfully,

And trust God's word, though undeserving,

There find the truth to set you free;

God will not fail to guide and bless

Those who embrace God's faithfulness.

TEACHING TIME

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

“The Apostles’ Creed”

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

      Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

      He was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

      Born of the Virgin Mary,

      Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

      Was crucified, died, and was buried;

      He descended to the dead.

      On the third day he rose again;

      He ascended into heaven,

      He is seated at the right hand of the Father,

      And he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

      The holy catholic Church

      The communion of saints,

      The forgiveness of sins,

      The resurrection of the body,

      And the life everlasting. Amen.

MORNING PRAYERS & LORD’S PRAYER

     Pastor: Let us turn our hearts to God in our morning prayers…the Lord be with you.

     People: And with you also.

     Pastor: Let us pray…

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

PARTING HYMN

“God Made From One Blood”

God made from one blood all the families of earth,

The circles of nurture that raise us from birth,

Companions who Join us to work through each stage

Of childhood, and youth, and adulthood, and age.

We turn to you, God, with our thanks and our tears

For all of the families we've known through the years,

The intimate networks on whom we depend

Of parents, and partners, and children, and friends.

Through families we've tasted the value of trust

And felt what it means to be loving and just,

Yet families have also betrayed their best goals,

Mistreating their members and bruising their souls.

Help families in all of their various forms

To face with integrity struggles and storms;

Grant peace to our homes that will nurture the bud

Of peace for the families you made from one blood.
