GATHERING HYMN  “God Reigns O’er All The Earth”              NCH #21

God reigns o'er all the part! Green hills and valleys low,

The farms and towns in golds and browns God's grace and beauty show.

God reigns o'er all the earth! Stone banks and spreading plains,

In rainbow hues - reds, yellows, blues - of dreams and country lanes.

God reigns o'er human life! Through youth and aging years,

In death, in birth, in grief, in mirth, in all our hopes and fears.

God reigns o'er human life! Our inspiration still.

Through all our schemes, in all our dreams, we see god's reigning will.

God reigns o'er time and space! In history's bygone days,

Christ's faithful folk in reverence spoke to bring God earnest praise.

God reigns o'er time and space! O'er galaxy and sun,

through timeless years the cosmos hears the heavenly music run.

God reigns! Emmanuel! god with us every day,

In all our past and to the last, our comfort and our stay.

God reigns! Emmanuel! Let praise to Christ be sung!

God's presence here makes all things dear. Let joyful bells be rung!

Jane Parker Huber, 1981 / Franklin L. Sheppard, 1915

Gracious God, we often forget that you are the ruler of our lives. Instead, we turn our attention elsewhere. We want what others have. We allow the concerns of the world to weigh us down. We become distracted by the activities around us. We forget to keep our focus on you. Forgive us. Strengthen our faith, that we may see your presence in our lives. Remind us again that you are the Lord of our lives – the one who loves us completely, the one who offers us abundant forgiveness, the one who never leaves our side. In your holy name we pray. Amen.

Genesis 3: 8-13

The Man & Woman Disobey God

They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”  He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.”  He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”  The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.”

Mark 3: 20-35

Jesus & Beelzebul

The crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, “He has gone out of his mind.”  And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.”  And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. “Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness but is guilty of an eternal sin”— for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”

Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.”  And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?”  And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

“Christ Is Made The Sure Foundation”

Christ Is Made the sure foundation, Christ the head and cornerstone.

Chosen of our God and precious, binding all the Church in one;

Holy Zion's help forever, and our confidence alone.

To this temple, where we call you, come, O God of Hosts, today!

With your constant, loving kindness hear your people as they pray.

Give your fullest benediction: grace to follow Christ the Way.

Here renew your servants' vision that by faith they may attain

Peace and hope, renewed compassion, strength to comfort those in pain,

Tears and grief transformed to gladness in your everlasting reign.

“The Apostles’ Creed”

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

      Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

      He was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

      Born of the Virgin Mary,

      Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

      Was crucified, died, and was buried;

      He descended to the dead.

      On the third day he rose again;

      He ascended into heaven,

      He is seated at the right hand of the Father,

      And he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

      The holy catholic Church

      The communion of saints,

      The forgiveness of sins,

      The resurrection of the body,

      And the life everlasting. Amen.

“How Can I Keep From Singing?“ arr. Lloyd Larson

Chancel Choir

     Pastor: Let us turn our hearts to God in our morning prayers…the Lord be with you.

     People: And with you also.

     Pastor: Let us pray…

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

     Response: “Doxology”

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Praise Him, all creatures here below.

Praise Him above ye heav’nly host.

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen.

     Prayer Of Dedication

“The Church's One Foundation”

The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ our Lord;

We are Christ's new creation by water and the word;

From heav'n Christ came and sought us in love to set us free;

with precious blood Christ bought us for all eternity.

Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth,

one charter of salvation, one God, one faith, one birth,

One name together blessing, one holy food we share,

To one hope we are pressing, at one in work and prayer.

'Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of our war,

We wait the consummation of peace forevermore;

Till with the vision glorious, our longing eyes are blessed,

And the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.

Yet we on earth have union with God, the Three-in-One,

And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won.

O happy ones and holy! God, give us grace that we,

Like them, the meat and lowly, may live eternally.

Samuel J. Stone, 1866 / Samuel S. Wesley, 1864
