Eighth Sunday After Pentecost

May our worship draw us into God’s household and form us together into a temple of God’s Spirit so that the world may know the grace and compassion of the Good Shepherd who has called us and who loves us with an eternal, unquenchable love. Amen.

“Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us”

Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need your tender care;
In your pleasant pastures feed us, for our use your folds prepare.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, you have bought us, yours we are;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, you have bought us, yours we are.

We are yours, in love befriend us, be the guardian of our way;
Keep your flock, from sin defend us, seek us when we go astray.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, hear your children when we pray;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, hear your children when we pray.

Let us always seek your favor, let us always do your will;
Jesus Christ, our only Savior, with your love our spirits fill.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, you have loved us, love us still;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, you have loved us, love us still.

Dorothy A. Thrupp, 1836 / William B. Bradbury, 1859

Guiding, guardian God, we do not want to be like sheep without a shepherd, or strangers wandering alone in the world. We want to know your presence, and trust that you dwell within us. We yearn for conviction that your Spirit flows in and through us. Fill us when we are empty. Forgive us when we are wrong. Guide us when we are lost. Comfort us when we are tired. In your loving name, we pray. Amen.

     Pastor: God’s peace is yours!

     People: And yours also!

(please safely share God’s peace with those around you)

     Pastor: Let us praise the Lord!

     People: The Lord’s name be praised!

     Response: “Glory Be To The Father”

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be.

World without end! Amen. Amen.

Ephesians 2: 1-10

From Death To Life

You were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.

Mark 6: 30-34, 53-56

Jesus Teaches & Heals

The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.

“Creator God, Creating Still”

        Creator God, creating still, by will and word and deed,

Create a new humanity to meet the present need.

Redeemer God, redeeming still, with overflowing grace,

Pour out our love on us, through us, make this a holy place.

Sustainer God, sustaining still, with strength for every day,

Empower us now to do your will. Correct us when we stray.

Great Triune God, for this new day we need your presence still.

Create, redeem, sustain us now to do your work and will.

Jane Parker Huber, 1977 / William Croft, 1708

“A New Creed”

We are not alone, we live in God’s world.

 We believe in God:
    who has created and is creating,
    who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh,
       to reconcile and make new,
    who works in us and others by the Spirit.

We trust in God.

We are called to be the Church:
    to celebrate God’s presence,
    to live with respect in Creation,
    to love and serve others,
    to seek justice and resist evil,
    to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,

    our judge and our hope.

In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us.
We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

United Church Of Canada

     Pastor: The Lord be with you.

     People: And with you also.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

     Response: “Doxology”

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Praise Him, all creatures here below.

Praise Him above ye heav’nly host.

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen.

     Prayer Of Dedication

“Christ Is Made The Sure Foundation”

Christ is made the sure foundation,
Christ the head and cornerstone,
chosen of our Go, and precious,
binding all the Church in one;
Holy Zion's help for ever,
and our confidence alone.

To this temple, where we call you,
come, O God of Hosts, today!
With your constant, loving kindness
hear your people as they pray.
Give your fullest benediction:
grace to follow Christ the Way.

Here renew your servants' vision,
that by faith they may attain
peace and hope, renewed compassion,
strength to comfort those in pain,
Tears and grief transformed to gladness
in your everlasting reign.

John Mason Neale, 1851 / Henry T. Smart, 1867
