Second Sunday In Lent

God of justice and peace, from the heavens you rain down mercy and kindness, that all on earth may stand in awe and wonder before your marvelous deeds. Raise our heads and hearts in expectation, that we may keep awake and prepare for the coming of the Lord into our world. Be with us in this time of worship. Amen.

Pastor:  From generation to generation, God names us and claims us.

People: Blessed be the Lord, our God.

Pastor:  When we try to tell God what to do, Christ leads us back onto the paths of life.

People: Let all who draw breath come back to the Lord.

Pastor:  From our earliest steps, the Spirit guides our steps and sets before us the ways of life and death.

People: Let the faithful rejoice in the mysteries of our God.

Pastor:  From generation to generation, God names us and claims us.

People: Let heaven and earth praise God’s holy name.

“Beneath The Cross Of Jesus"

Beneath the cross of Jesus I gladly take my stand,

The shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land;

A home within the wilderness,

A rest upon the way,

From the burning of the noontide heat,

and the burden of the day.

Upon the cross of Jesus within my mind I see

The very dying form of One who suffered there for me;

And from my grieving heart with tears

Two wonders I confess:

The wonders of Christ’s glorious love

And my unworthiness.

I take, O cross, your shadow for my abiding place;

I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of Christ’s face;

Content to let the world go by,

To know no gain or loss,

My sinful self my only shame,

My glory all the cross.

We come, bringing the dead and empty places of our lives.  We believe that God gives life to the dead, but we do not know what to do. We cannot find the answers we seek. We believe that God creates order out of chaos, but we feel unloved and we are sure that no one cares.  We know that God so loved the world that God gave us Jesus Christ and those who believe in Jesus shall not perish, but have eternal life.  But we are afraid of life and we are afraid of death.  Lord, forgive our doubts and our fears.  Help us to rejoice in your blessings.

     Pastor: God’s peace is yours!

     People: And yours also!

(please safely share God’s peace with those around you)

     Pastor: Let us praise the Lord!

     People: The Lord’s name be praised!

     Response: “Glory Be To The Father”

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be.

World without end! Amen. Amen.

Psalm 22: 1-10

Deliverance From Suffering & Hostility

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer; and by night, but find no rest. Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. To you they cried, and were saved; in you they trusted, and were not put to shame. But I am a worm, and not human; scorned by others, and despised by the people. All who see me mock at me; they make mouths at me, they shake their heads; “Commit your cause to the Lord; let him deliver—let him rescue the one in whom he delights!” Yet it was you who took me from the womb;you kept me safe on my mother’s breast. On you I was cast from my birth, and since my mother bore me you have been my God.

Mark 8: 31-38

Jesus Foretells His Death & Resurrection

Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”

He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

“In The Cross Of Christ I Glory”

In the cross of Christ I glory,

Towering o’er the wrecks of time;

All the light of sacred story

Gathers ‘round its head sublime.

Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure,

By the cross are sanctified;

Peace is there that knows no measure,

Joys that through all time abide.

“The Apostles’ Creed”

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

     Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

     He was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

     Born of the Virgin Mary,

     Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

     Was crucified, died, and was buried;

     He descended to the dead.

     On the third day he rose again;

     He ascended into heaven,

     He is seated at the right hand of the Father,

     And he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

     The holy catholic Church,

     The communion of saints,

     The forgiveness of sins,

     The resurrection of the body

     And the life everlasting. Amen.

     Pastor: Let us turn our hearts to God in our morning prayers…the Lord be with you.

     People: And with you also.

     Pastor: Let us pray…

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

     Response: “Doxology”

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Praise Him, all creatures here below.

Praise Him above ye heav’nly host.

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen.

     Prayer Of Dedication

“Spirit Of The Living God”

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me;

Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.

Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

There will be no mid-week Lenten services at St. John's this year. You are invited to worship with St. Mark's UCC each Wednesday evening. In-person services will be held at 7:00PM and will be livestreamed for those who prefer to worship from home.

Again this year during the 40 days of Lent, we will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Schuylkill Haven Food Pantry.  Anyone who would like to participate may take a reusable grocery bag in which to place items for those in need. Attached to each bag is a suggestion list and prayers you may use as a you add your donations to the bag.  All bags should be returned to church on Easter Sunday to be dedicated and sent to the Food Pantry.  Serving others is one way we serve God.
