First Sunday In Lent

PRAYER IN PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

God of justice and peace, from the heavens you rain down mercy and kindness, that all on earth may stand in awe and wonder before your marvelous deeds. Raise our heads and hearts in expectation, that we may keep awake and prepare for the coming of the Lord into our world. Be with us in this time of worship. Amen.

GREETING & ANNOUNCEMENTS

SOLEMN DECLARATION & CALL TO WORSHIP

When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, he emerged from the waters…

To see the heavens splitting open and the Spirit soaring down like a dove.

When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, he stood up from the waters and heard:

“You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, he emerged from the waters…

To walk a new path and to call the world to join him.

Here comes God’s kingdom.

Teach us your path, Jesus. Now is the time!

GATHERING HYMN

“Shall We Gather At The River”

Shall we gather at the river,

where bright angel feet have trod,

with its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God?

Yes, we’ll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river,

Gather with the saints at the river

That flows by the throne of God.

As we reach the shining river,

Lay we every burden down;

Grace our spirits will deliver, and provide a robe and crown.

Yes, we’ll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river,

Gather with the saints at the river

That flows by the throne of God.

Soon, we’ll reach the shining river,

Soon our pilgrimage will cease;

Soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace.

Yes, we’ll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river,

Gather with the saints at the river

That flows by the throne of God.

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

When temptation whispers, we want to answer that call: we long to be powerful; we want to be all‐knowing; we long to be in control; we want things our own way. Compassionate God, give us courage to admit our failings; teach us to speak the truth; keep us from any deceit. Transform our hearts by the power of your grace, that we may accept your forgiveness, and live with joy the life you give us. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING

Psalm 25: 1-10

Prayer for Guidance & Deliverance

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not let my enemies exult over me. Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long. Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness’ sake, O Lord! Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

GOSPEL READING

Mark 1: 9-15

The Baptism & Temptation Of Jesus

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God,  and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

TEACHING TIME FOR CHILDREN & ADULTS

HYMN

“Lord Jesus, Who Through Forty Days”

1. Lord Jesus, who through forty days

For us did fast and pray,

Teach us with you to mourn our sins,

And close by you to stay.

2. As you with Satan did contend,

And did the victory win,

O give us strength to persevere,

In you to conquer sin.

3. And through these days of penitence,

And through this Passion-tide.

Yes, evermore, in life and death,

O Christ with us abide.

MEDITATION

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

“The Apostles’ Creed”

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

     Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

     He was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

     Born of the Virgin Mary,

     Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

     Was crucified, died, and was buried;

     He descended to the dead.

     On the third day he rose again;

     He ascended into heaven,

     He is seated at the right hand of the Father,

     And he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

     The holy catholic Church,

     The communion of saints,

     The forgiveness of sins,

     The resurrection of the body

     And the life everlasting. Amen.

MORNING PRAYERS & LORD’S PRAYER

     Let us turn our hearts to God in our morning prayers…the Lord be with you.

     And with you also.

     Let us pray…

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

PARTING HYMN

“Just As I Am”

1. Just as I am, without one plea

But that your blood was shed for me,

And that you called inviting me,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

2. Just as I am, you will receive,

Will welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;

Because your promise I believe,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
