Transfiguration Sunday

"Souper Bowl" of Caring

Holy God, mighty and immortal, you are beyond our knowing, yet we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ, whose compassion illumines the world. As we worship together today, transform us into the likeness of the love of Christ, who renewed our humanity so that we may share in his divinity. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who live and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Leader: And God created the heavens and the earth.

C: And gave them to us to use and to enjoy.

L: And God breathed life into each of us, and set us upon the earth.

C: And God sent Jesus Christ to save us from the pull of death.

L: Everything that fills our souls with gladness and light is a gift from our loving Creator.

C: We have been entrusted with unfathomable riches. For all this our God is to be praised! Let us worship God.

from “Flames of the Spirit” Ruth C. Duck, ed.

“We Have Come At Christ's Own Bidding”

1. We have come at Christ’s own bidding

To this high and holy place,

Where we wait with hope and longing

For some token of God’s grace.

Here we pray for new assurance

That our faith is not in vain,

Searching like those first disciples

For a sign both clear and plain.

2. Strengthened by this glimpse of glory,

Fearful lest our faith decline,

We, like Peter find it tempting

To remain and build a shrine,

But true worship gives us courage

To proclaim what we profess,

That our daily lives may prove us

People of the God we bless.

Shine upon us with your grace, that we might see what frightens us and face what threatens us. Flow through us with your mercy, that we might sense your presence, even when we have run away, and that we may know your love, even when we feel most unlovable. Abide in us with your love, for your love claims us and makes us whole. Amen.

     God’s peace is yours!

     And yours also!

     Let us praise the Lord!

     The Lord’s name be praised!

Response: “Glory Be To The Father”

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be.

World without end! Amen. Amen.

2 Corinthians 4: 5-10

Treasure In Clay Jars

For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.

Mark 9: 2-9

The Transfiguration Of Jesus

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them anymore, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

“Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove”

1. Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,

With all your quick’ning powers;

Kindle a flame of sacred love

In these cold hearts of ours.

2. In vain we tune our formal songs,

In vain we strive to rise;

Hosannas languish on our tongues,

And our devotion dies.

3. Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,

With all your quick’ning powers;

Come, shed on us the Savior’s love,

That it may kindle ours.

“The Apostles’ Creed”

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

     Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

He was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

     Born of the Virgin Mary,

     Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

     Was crucified, died, and was buried;

     He descended to the dead.

     On the third day he rose again;

     He ascended into heaven,

He is seated at the right hand of the Father,

And he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

     The holy catholic Church,

     The communion of saints,

     The forgiveness of sins,

     The resurrection of the body

     And the life everlasting. Amen.

Grace, mercy, and peace to you from Jesus Christ. To God be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen.

Affirmation of ministry is the act where by St. John’s United Church of Christ recognizes the diverse gifts of its members and celebrates the particular ministry of each person in the life of the church.

L: There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them.

C: There are different ways of serving, but the same God is served.

L: There are different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives ability to each of us for our particular service.

C: The Spirit’s presence is shown in some way in each person for the good of all.

L:  Christ is like a single body, which has many parts.

C: It is still one body even though it is made up of different parts.

L: If one part of the body suffers, all the other parts suffer with it; if one part is praised, all the other parts share its happiness.

C: All of us are Christ's body, and each one is part of it.

Will the newly elected consistory members and those remaining Elders and Deacons please rise. These people have been called by God to serve in various ministries in God’s world. They have accepted their call and desire to witness to that call in the presence of this congregation.

Sisters and brothers in Christ, it is an honor to be entrusted with the responsibility for particular service in the ministry of the church, whether gathered or scattered. Having prayerfully considered the duties and responsibilities of your ministry are you prepared to serve with the help of God in Christ’s name and for the glory of God? If so, answer I am.

Do you promise to exercise your ministry diligently and faithfully, showing forth the love of Christ? If so, answer I do, relying on God’s grace.

Fellow members of St. John’s United Church of Christ, you have heard the promises of our brothers and sisters in Christ who have answered God’s call to service. Let us affirm our intention to live in covenant with them. Will those who are able please rise and witness to the commitment we now make?

We gather in celebration of the joy that is ours to be partners with you in the service of Jesus Christ. We promise to love you, honor your leadership, and assist you that together we may be a faithful church of Jesus Christ.

The laying on of hands is the symbolic act whereby the church in every age recognizes God’s call to ministry in the lives of the faithful men and women and asks the Holy Spirit to confer upon them the gifts of ministry. We lay hands today upon:

MORNING PRAYERS & LORD’S PRAYER (using debts/debtors)

L: Let us turn our hearts to God in our morning prayers…the Lord be with you.

C: And with you also.

L: Let us pray…

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Let us bring our gifts – the work of our hands, our hearts, and our lives – that they may help to bring hope to our world through the Good News of Jesus Christ. Let join in singing God’s praise…

Response: “Doxology”

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Praise Him, all creatures here below.

Praise Him above ye heav’nly host.

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen.

Prayer Of Dedication

“Jesus, Take Us To The Mountain”

1. Jesus, take us to the mountain,

Where, with Peter, James, and John,

We are dazzled by your glory, light as blinding as the sun.

There prepare us for the night by the vision of that sight.

2. What do you want us to see there,

That your close companions saw?

Your divinity revealed there fills us with the self-same awe.

Clothed in flesh like ours you go

Matched to meet our deadliest foe.

3. What do you want us to hear there,

That your dear disciples heard?

Once again, the voice from heaven

Says of the Incarnate Word:

“Listen, listen, everyone, this is my beloved Son!”

     Response: “Amen, Amen, Amen”
