Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost

PRAYER IN PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

O God, like a thunderstorm in the desert, your grace restores our parched souls. We are redeemed not because we are good, but because you are merciful. We rejoice in the saving power of Jesus the Christ, who delivers us from the death of sin. Amen.

GATHERING HYMN

“There's A Wideness In God's Mercyl”

There's a wideness in God's mercy, like the wideness of the sea;

There's a kindness in God's justice, which is more than liberty.

There's no place where earthly sorrows are more felt than in God's heaven;

There's no place where earthly failings have such kindly judgment given.

For the love of God is broader than the measure of our minds;

And the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind.

If our love were but more faithful, we would gladly trust God's word;

And our lives would show thanksgiving for the goodness of our God.

IN BABILONE

CALL TO CONFESSION

UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of the rainbow, you made a covenant with all creatures, promising life and hope. God of pathways, you show us how we should walk. Yet we forget our connection with one another and think that we are the center of the universe. We wander from your paths of truth into paths of deceit and pride. Forgive us and lead us back into the arms of your love. Amen.

FIRST READING

Ephesians 4:25 – 5:2

Rules For The New Life

So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

GOSPEL READING

Matthew 18: 21-35

The Parable Of The Unforgiving Servant

Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.

“For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’ Then his fellow slave fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he would pay the debt. When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

HYMN

“I Need You Every Hour

I need you every hour. O God of grace;

The peace your voice affords, I now embrace.

I need you, how I need you! Every hour I need you;

O bless me now, my Savior; I come to you.

I need you every hour, in faith or fear;

Temptations lose their power when you are near.

I need you, how I need you! Every hour I need you;

O bless me now, my Savior; I come to you.

I need you every hour, in joy or pain;

Come quickly and abide or life is vain.

I need you, how I need you! Every hour I need you;

O bless me now, my Savior; I come to you.

I need you every hour; teach me your will,

And your rich promises in me fulfill.

I need you, how I need you! Every hour I need you;

O bless me now, my Savior; I come to you.

TEACHING TIME

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

“The Apostles’ Creed”

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

      Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

      He was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

      Born of the Virgin Mary,

      Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

      Was crucified, died, and was buried;

      He descended to the dead.

      On the third day he rose again;

      He ascended into heaven,

      He is seated at the right hand of the Father,

      And he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

      The holy catholic Church

      The communion of saints,

      The forgiveness of sins,

      The resurrection of the body,

      And the life everlasting. Amen.

MORNING PRAYERS & LORD’S PRAYER

     Leader: The Lord be with you.

     People: And with you also.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

PARTING HYMN

“God Be With You”

God be with you till we meet again;

By good counsel guide, uphold you,

With a shepherd's care enfold you;

God be with you till we meet again.

Till we meet, till we meet, till we meet at Jesus' feet;

Till we meet, till we meet, God be with you till we meet again.

God be with you till we meet again;

Keep love's banner floating o'er you,

Smite death's threatening wave before you;

God be with you till we meet again.

Till we meet, till we meet, till we meet at Jesus' feet;

Till we meet, till we meet, God be with you till we meet again.

GOD BE WITH YOU
